What Font Is - the best font finder tool

How it Works

Some use the system to find a specific font missing from the sources sent by the client or just because they see a nice font and want to know what font is this. We believe you should be able to use the font identifier to search a font regardless of the publisher, producer or foundry.
Enjoy our font detector and good luck finding what the font you are looking for!

Drop your photo

step-01

Upload a clean image of the text containing the font you need to identify. The system uses advanced AI to find the font in 90% of the cases. The rest of 10% ‘misses’ are usually caused by low quality images (low resolution, text distorted, etc).

See here some examples of what a ‘good’ image looks like.

step-02

We’ll try to automatically separate the letters. For cursive fonts you will have to separate each letter with our advanced image editor.

step-03

We’ll show over 60 fonts very similar to the one in the image you have uploaded and with links to pages from where you can download or buy them. Please respect the work of the font makers and use the font according to the license (free or commercial) .

1. Getting Started with WhatFontIs

How it works in 3 steps:

  1. Upload (or URL / drag-and-drop) an image with text.
  2. The AI analyzes glyph shapes to match against a huge database: over 1,100,000 fonts (free and commercial)
  3. Receive an exact match or up to 60+ similar fonts

  • Free Plan: Identify up to 5 fonts per day; supported by ads. Great for occasional use.
  • PRO Membership: Offers unlimited searches, ad-free experience, custom text previews, advanced filters (price, foundry), and rich results (up to 100 fonts)

  • Universal coverage: both free and commercial fonts from multiple foundries.
  • No bias toward a specific marketplace, aiming to be comprehensive and foundry-agnostic

  • Fully web-based; works on any modern browser (phone/tablet).
  • No native app, but full features, including editor and forums, are accessible online.

  • Yes, a Chrome extension lets you identify fonts directly on webpages.
  • Extension taps into the same extensive font database.

2. Tips for Best Identification Results

Improve your image quality:

  • Use high contrast (e.g., black text on white).
  • Keep text horizontal, sharp, and large enough.
  • Crop to a single line; avoid distortion or noise.
  • Use the built-in image editor to adjust contrast, crop, and rotate for better accuracy.

  • Use the editor to erase gaps and separate overlapping letters so the AI can analyze individual glyphs.
  • This increases accuracy, especially for cursive or script fonts.

  • Acceptable formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF.
  • Upload only one font style at a time, and preferably a single clear line of text.

3. Troubleshooting & Advanced Use

  • In most cases, the AI succeeds, but rare, custom, or poor-quality fonts may not be identified.
  • In such cases, post your image on the WhatFontIs Community Forum, where expert designers can often help.

  • Ads fund the server operations, font database, and ongoing AI improvements.
  • Upgrading to PRO removes ads and enhances workflow efficiency.

  • Yes, the API is available for developers and businesses to integrate font identification into their products (e.g., design apps or asset management systems).

4. PRO Membership Details

  • Unlimited Identifications – run as many font searches as you need without monthly limits
  • Ad-Free Usage – enjoy a clean, distraction-free interface, with faster performance
  • Custom Text Preview – see how your own text looks in identified fonts before downloading
  • Advanced Filters – filter by price, foundry, or other attributes to refine search results
  • Rich Results – access up to 100 matching fonts per search, covering free and commercial options

Free 7-day trial available – cancel anytime during the trial period. Contact us for more information.

5. How WhatFontIs Compares to Other Tools

  • WhatFontIs: ~990K fonts across all sources; offers image editor and broader coverage.
  • WhatTheFont (MyFonts): Smaller database (~133K), commercial-focused. WhatFontIs is generally more versatile and powerful

  • Matcherator searches Fontspring’s library (~900K), but still more limited than a universal database.
  • WhatFontIs does not restrict suggestions to one retail platform

  • WhatFontIs: Fast visual matching via image.
  • Identifont: Q&A-based search when no image is available.

6. Typography Education & Licensing

  • Typeface: The overall design (e.g., Helvetica).
  • Font: A specific variant (e.g., Helvetica Bold 12pt).

Thousands of designers (famous or not) use the image font detection system to find a font or similar free fonts from an image. Although we have the largest database of fonts, the search for a font from an image gets mixed results like the image above.
